Preparation Is the Key to Painting Cupboards Successfully In thirty years of remodeling cabinets, Ive learned that preparation is one of the most important aspects of painting kitchen or bathroom cupboards. In this article, we will explore a few of the things that can really make a difference in how the painting project will look when it is all done. IMPORTANT: DO NOT RUSH through this renovation. Allowing plenty of time to do it right is essential to the success of having your kitchen or bathroom cupboards look new again. Cleaning the Cupboards Mix a solution of Dawn dish washing detergent and water to wash your cupboards with. The areas around the stove and hood should be gone over several times to ensure that all of the grease buildup is removed. If you are preparing Formica surfaces, you can use lacquer thinner on them to remove grease build-up. Using Wood Putty and Caulking You are going to have to remove the cabinet doors and you should replace all of the hinges, handles or knobs while renovating the cupboards. This is probably going to leave a few holes that will need to be filled with wood filler. You should sand the areas down before placing the filler in the holes and allow sufficient time for it to completely dry. Use the wood filler on every crack and crevice that you can find. You should also caulk around all areas where the cupboards meet the walls, ceiling and floors. Be sure to wipe the access caulking off really well with a damp rag. You only want to fill the void areas. If it is necessary to rinse the rag out a few times because of all of the caulking thats OK. Just get it all off of the cupboards, walls, floor and ceiling. Sanding the Cabinets Once the wood putty is thoroughly dry, sand those areas first so that they are nice and flush. If you need to add more filler, DO NOT omit this step. Every inch of the cupboards should be sanded that will be painted. There is an optional product that can be used here, but you must check with your local paint supply company to ensure that it will work with the materials that your cupboards are made of. You can apply a liquid deglosser that will work almost as good as sanding the cupboards. Granted, you will still need to use sandpaper for the places you applied the putty to. Repeating the Process Once you have cleaned the cupboards, filled all of the blemishes and thoroughly sanded them, repeat all of these steps again. This is known as going over them with a fine-toothed comb. Trust me, this is what makes the difference between the do-it-yourself look or obtaining professional results. Applying the First Coat of Primer Painting the cupboards with a thin coat of primer is the next step. Allow the paint to completely dry. Fill any blemishes with filler and sand them out again. Repeat this process of applying the paint primer, filling flaws and sanding them out until the cupboards are literally "spotless." Now the process of painting the finish coats on the cupboards can begin. Its important to realize that the final coats of paint will only look as good as the surface is underneath. If theres a run, dip, depression or scratch anywhere in the primers surface, the exact same flaw will be seen when the finish coats of paint are applied to the cabinetry.

Revitalise Cupboards With New Cupboard Doors Dont junk the cupboard! Replace the Door! We spend a lot of time decorating our houses to keep them looking fresh and modern. One area we tend to neglect is fitted cupboards and cabinets we have around the house. They tend to be ignored because we think we cant do anything with them. If you rip them out youve got a repair job on the paint or wallpaper not to mention the gap it leaves! Its time to look at it in a different way by considering replacement doors. We often think about replacement doors for kitchens but what about other rooms? That fitted cupboard that you put the towels in the bathroom or the cupboards in your bedroom can easily be revitalised by simply replacing the doors. Sometimes we dont even have a cupboard but could really do with one. It may be that there is an odd space or a difficult angled area that you think you cant turn into a cupboard. As long as you find a company that can make made to measure cupboards and doors you can. The key when selecting a supplier for your replacement cupboard doors is to ensure they have facilities on site to make doors to custom sizes. Doors do come in standard sizes but not every cupboard you have is going to be a standard off-the-shelf size. If you find a supplier who offers a made to measure service the world is your oyster. You can have doors made for any size cupboard. The same goes if you actually need to build a new cupboard. Dont forget the styles and colours for your doors too. You need to find a supplier that can offer you a wide range so that you can match your new cupboard door to your existing decoration. You ideally want one who can offer you free samples so that you can take a few away and see what they look like against the rest of your room. If you want to be a bit more creative with your door you may want to consider having a unique pattern or design cut into it. For older houses, some cupboard doors may need to be ventilated to prevent mildew and mould building up, particularly if the wall of the cupboard is and external one. Having a design cut into the door can help you provide a stylish solution to this problem. You need to make sure your supplier has the capability to do this. The final thing to remember is you may need new fittings for your door. This includes hinges and door handles. If you are modernising your cupboard door, a new handle will be a must as an old, worn handle will look wrong and detract from your new door. Replacing cupboard doors is a great way to spruce up a tired old cupboard and make it look like new. Its a much more cost effective way of modernising your house and its more environmentally friendly too.
