People could make a decision on a house because of one option or choice, but more often than not, it is determined by several factors. Most choices come down to a house being well designed and fitting a families needs. From this an individual or family will expect the house or "investment" to grow in value over time. Some elements of the house are a bonus. Yes a well designed house makes the choice easier, but then with this choice will come other features that are nice additions. Smaller features of a house are not the deciding factor of home buying, but often help with the decision. One of these smaller features that could go along way is the kitchen cupboards or in other words the kitchen cabinets. Cabinets are not the first thing you think about when entering a house, but once you get to the kitchen, this feature becomes a noticeable and important attribute. A kitchen cupboard is an old term that has slowly transformed over the last half century. Many homes built before the nineteen fifties had the traditional kitchen cupboards. These cabinets were large solid wood fixtures that were often custom built for each individual house. The kitchen cupboard has transformed over the years and has become smaller in size. Of course this transformation has already started to go in a cycle and the traditional kitchen cupboard, once out of date, is showing up again. The housing boom in the nineteen fifties, largely brought on by the prosperity after the war caused a large demand for new housing. Tract housing developments called for new ideas for the kitchen. Traditional kitchen cupboards were no longer practical; instead, smaller, sleeker cabinets were needed to fit into these new houses. Houses were smaller and a large kitchen now became obsolete, so the kitchen cupboard was now substituted with the modern kitchen cabinet. For the next forty to fifty years these cabinets were the dominate feature in the kitchen. Of course there are always exceptions, but for the most part, the kitchen cupboard was downsized in height and width, made less appealing, and mostly was there for usage not design. Fortunately the cycle of design has changed and kitchen cabinets have come full circle. There are more choices today and actually a style of the kitchen cupboard is back in fashion. Large pantry cabinets have come back into a house and from this the renaissance of the kitchen has begun. Another sign of a "throw back" kitchen is the return of the taller kitchen cabinet. Most cabinets are around thirty inches high; however a forty two inch kitchen cabinet or kitchen cupboard had now become an option. Of course if youre going to buy these larger (forty two inch) kitchen cupboards, you will need a higher ceiling, but if you have that higher ceiling, these kitchen cabinets fill the space nicely. The kitchen cupboard has come a long way. Once a piece of furniture, it was then reduced to a no-frills, practical use, but now it has made its way into the kitchen as a furnishing with style.

Organizing Tips - How to Organize Messy Cupboards There are many benefits to having organized cupboards and, specifically, kitchen cupboards. How many times have you been looking for a box of spaghetti and not been able to find it? Off to the store you go to buy yet another box of spaghetti, only to discover while looking for something else the following week that you now have enough spaghetti to feed a small army. Organized cupboards saves you money on your grocery bills, the time you had to take to go to the store and the aggravation of digging through the cupboards to come up empty-handed when you know you have the item you are looking for. Simple organization of your cupboards will put an end to all that hassle. If your cupboard space is small, invest in one or a few of the over the door racks that hold canned goods and smaller items. Plastic shelves designed for cupboards are also ideal to use in the kitchen. A great way to use them is for small items such as cups that can be stored on and below the shelf to save space in the cupboard and yet be accessible. Put boxed food, such as all your pasta items on one shelf. This includes macaroni noodles, the 42 boxes of spaghetti you now have, macaroni and cheese as well as your tomato, Alfredo and any canned or jar spaghetti sauce. Depending on the size of your cupboard shelves, designate a shelf for breakfast foods, a shelf for canned goods such as vegetables and fruits and a shelf for juice drinks, mixes, tea bags, coffee and hot coco. Put snack foods and lunch foods that the kids can help themselves to on a lower shelf so they can easily reach them. Of course, you will want to have guidelines concerning the availability of these snacks for the children. Invest in a label maker and label the shelves with the items that go on them. Now, if your spouse or kids help put the groceries away, they know where to put them. If you have a lot of cupboard space you could go as far as making a label for the outside of each cupboard. This, of course, would depend on the style of your kitchen and would need to be attractive as well as useful. Keeping your kitchen cupboards organized will not only save you time when you are running late and need to make a quick lunch or dinner but will also help the babysitter find the juice boxes if you step out for the evening. Colorado Over 50 was started by a Baby Boomer and his wife to address the challenges and joys of being part of the Baby Boomer generation.

Beautiful Cupboard Handles for Giving Your Old Furniture a Whole New Look Furnishing your home can be a tedious and costly process. Choose to simplify this process for both your wallet and the environment, by reusing parts that you own already. With a little creativity, you can return a used item or forgotten in a custom for your home with little money. The main idea in renewing old furniture is to get new, not very expensive, beautiful cupboard handles. From wood, from plastic, brown, pink, big, small, transparent or not, cupboard handles are known for giving a new glam to your old furniture. The key to a decorative furniture reuse is to look beyond the current sad state it is in, and to imagine what it could become by adding colorful and live cupboard handles. Do not let old furniture with broken handles and a few scratches stop you. Use guides that you could simplify your work. In some ways the piece speaks for itself, listen up! Reuse is an organic way to show your individual style, so be careful on what attracts you and decorate with love. If you love the curved edge of an otherwise ugly cupboard, imagine how it would look with new handles and a new paint job. If the clean lines of an art deco-inspired wardrobe tempt you, prepare to give it a lift. There are numerous styles of handles, but its up to you and your personality to see which ones you want to get: wood cupboard handles, metal, even glass cupboard handles in every shape and size that you can imagine. The most important thing you need to take into account is whether the structure of the furniture is in good enough condition so that you can give them new handles. For couches and chairs, make sure that frames are strong and that springs are intact (if applicable to the situation). To repair the foundation of furniture is a much more expensive process. For wood pieces such as cupboards, tables and cabinets, you can fix the legs and shelves, but the major cracks in the wood can be difficult to repair. Youll be amazed at how much glow you can find by doing a little sanding and painting. Also consider the cupboard handles to fit well to the old look, in order to not make it look ugly. There is a large amount of handles to choose from, such as: handles with Swarovski crystals, gold/silver handles, wood and plastic available in every color imaginable. So be wise when choosing good handles, because they will totally change the appearance of your home. Choose aluminum handles if your kitchen is a modern one and choose classic round metal handles if your kitchen is a classic one. Dont hesitate any longer and choose the best on the market! Renew your homes look by getting beautiful cupboard handles instead of renewing your whole furniture. Its less expensive and you will simply adore the results!

Builders Tips - Fix Cupboards BUILT-IN CUPBOARDS Nearly every residence has some built-in cupboards and often we want more of them! Whether inside the kitchen, bedroom or bathroom, theyre usually in fairly constant use and so suffer the exact same wear and tear troubles suffered by doors and windows. Kitchen cupboards in particular break from constant opening and closing and being in contact with water and heat. Built-in cupboards could be one of the additional expensive things to call a tradesperson in to build. There are some jobs the average DIYer can do around the house to fix up difficulties and update the look of their built-ins. Kitchen cupboard doors no longer line up over time, cupboard doors tends to sag, particularly the ones that get used all the time. About once a year I need to take a screwdriver to the cupboard door hinges and fine-tune them to be able to keep the doors aligned. Most doors are designed to be adjusted rapidly and very easily with nothing more than a screwdriver, as most kitchens built inside the last 30 years or so have concealed, adjustable hinges. Usually these hinges have four adjusting screws, allowing you to make three main adjustments: Lateral - the front grub screw (or set screw) adjustment permits the door to be moved side to side. Depth - loosening the back screw enables the door to be moved in or out. Vertical - the two top and bottom screws enable for adjustment of the door in an up or down direction. Youll have to experiment with the readjusting to acquire ideal alignment, but you will soon get the hang of it. Its worth noting that most of these types of hinges are manufactured in Europe and will in all probability have Pozidriv screws in them. Fixing sagging corner cupboard doors The problem with built-in kitchens is the corner cupboard, It constantly ends up a black hole where you cant find anything thats pushed up the back, and the doors, being double Sectioned, usually sag and eventually fall off. This kind of hinged door is a lot heavier than your normal cupboard door, as the hinges on the cabinet and holds the combined weight of both doors, In order to counter this extra weight and open the gap between the top of the folding door as well as the adjacent door, you must compensate by over adjusting not only the hinges that attach the doors to the cabinet but also the hinges that join the two doors together. Both hinges will have an adjustment screw that fits via a slotted hole, usually at the back of the hinge assembly. Loosen this screw slightly and then push the two parts of the hinge closer together just before re-tightening. It could possibly take a couple of attempts to get the doors to sit where you would like them. Fixing drawers Just like the rollers on sliding doors, rollers on drawer runners can get worn or damaged. Replacing the inexpensive runners or slides will have the drawers rolling like new again and is really a fairly straightforward operation: 1 - Pull the drawer forward and lift the front to remove it from the cabinet. This will give you access to both parts of the roller assembly. 2 - Removing just a couple of screws will totally free up the old mechanism. Once again, a decent hardware store should have an exact matching assembly; if not, try cabinetmakers supplies in the phonebook. 3 - These are commonly sold in pairs and you must replace both sides of your drawer at once. You will only want a screwdriver to replace the old screws into the original screw holes. Sometimes with excess pulling and over loaded drawers (or perhaps if the runners had been broken), drawer front can turn out to be loose and pull away from the rest of the drawer. If this is happening to yours: 1 - Remove the drawers and clamp the front back into position. 2 - Add some tiny metal 90 degree angle brackets to the inside of the drawer prior to it comes apart entirely. Another common complaint is the collapse of the thin baseboard inside the drawer. This will normally take place for the reason that the drawer has been overloaded. Preparation Is the Key to Painting Cupboards Successfully In thirty years of remodeling cabinets, Ive learned that preparation is one of the most important aspects of painting kitchen or bathroom cupboards. In this article, we will explore a few of the things that can really make a difference in how the painting project will look when it is all done. IMPORTANT: DO NOT RUSH through this renovation. Allowing plenty of time to do it right is essential to the success of having your kitchen or bathroom cupboards look new again. Cleaning the Cupboards Mix a solution of Dawn dish washing detergent and water to wash your cupboards with. The areas around the stove and hood should be gone over several times to ensure that all of the grease buildup is removed. If you are preparing Formica surfaces, you can use lacquer thinner on them to remove grease build-up. Using Wood Putty and Caulking You are going to have to remove the cabinet doors and you should replace all of the hinges, handles or knobs while renovating the cupboards. This is probably going to leave a few holes that will need to be filled with wood filler. You should sand the areas down before placing the filler in the holes and allow sufficient time for it to completely dry. Use the wood filler on every crack and crevice that you can find. You should also caulk around all areas where the cupboards meet the walls, ceiling and floors. Be sure to wipe the access caulking off really well with a damp rag. You only want to fill the void areas. If it is necessary to rinse the rag out a few times because of all of the caulking thats OK. Just get it all off of the cupboards, walls, floor and ceiling. Sanding the Cabinets Once the wood putty is thoroughly dry, sand those areas first so that they are nice and flush. If you need to add more filler, DO NOT omit this step. Every inch of the cupboards should be sanded that will be painted. There is an optional product that can be used here, but you must check with your local paint supply company to ensure that it will work with the materials that your cupboards are made of. You can apply a liquid deglosser that will work almost as good as sanding the cupboards. Granted, you will still need to use sandpaper for the places you applied the putty to. Repeating the Process Once you have cleaned the cupboards, filled all of the blemishes and thoroughly sanded them, repeat all of these steps again. This is known as going over them with a fine-toothed comb. Trust me, this is what makes the difference between the do-it-yourself look or obtaining professional results. Applying the First Coat of Primer Painting the cupboards with a thin coat of primer is the next step. Allow the paint to completely dry. Fill any blemishes with filler and sand them out again. Repeat this process of applying the paint primer, filling flaws and sanding them out until the cupboards are literally "spotless." Now the process of painting the finish coats on the cupboards can begin. Its important to realize that the final coats of paint will only look as good as the surface is underneath. If theres a run, dip, depression or scratch anywhere in the primers surface, the exact same flaw will be seen when the finish coats of paint are applied to the cabinetry.

Painting Kitchen Cupboards With Formica Doors One of the fastest ways to brighten up the most used room in the home is by painting the kitchen area. For years people who buy and flip homes have remodeled cupboards on the fly by applying a new coat of paint to them. When done correctly, this can be a great way upgrade the look of things. You may want to consider replacing your existing flat doors with raised panel ones. I would recommend that you find a cabinet manufacturer in your area to order them from. It would be a good idea to consider having them install the new ones because there are a few tricky things involved in the process. Tools & Materials Needed -Putty Knife -Drop Cloths -Airless Industrial Paint Sprayer (obtained from a rent-all business) -Paint Designed to Adhere to Formica Surfaces (primer & topcoat) -220 Grit Sand Paper -Wood Filler -Masking Tape -Paint Brushes and Roller -Phillips Screwdriver -Plenty of Rags -Paint Respirator Mask Be sure to set aside plenty of time to complete the project without being rushed. The more time you spend in the preparation process-the better your Formica kitchen cabinets will look when you have finished painting the cupboards. Steps for Repainting Formica Kitchen Cabinets and Doors 1. Put the drop cloths in place. Remove all of the hardware (handles or Knobs) from the cupboard doors. 2. Take the doors off of the cabinets. If you have European hinges, you may NOT even need the Phillips screwdriver for this step. Check to see if there is a release tab on the backside of the hinge. If so, pull up on the tab and the hinge should release from the mounting plate. 3. Remove the hinges from the doors. 4. Clean all surfaces with a mild solution of soap and water that are going to be painted. Thoroughly dry off all of the areas that you have washed. 5. Fill all holes that you intend to eliminate and chipped areas with the wood filler. Allow the filler to completely dry before sanding. 6. Lightly sand all of the surfaces of the cupboard door and cabinets with the 220 sandpaper that will be painted. Wipe all of the dust off of the cabinets and doors. 7. Set up an area where you can spray the primer on the backside of the cupboard doors, preferable outside. Give them one mild coat of primer. 8. While the back of the doors are drying, apply primer to the Formica cabinets using the roller and brush. When you are finished, the doors should be ready for a second coat of primer. 9. Repeat the process of painting the kitchen cupboards and doors with the primer until all areas have had two coats applied. Once the primer is completely dry, you may lightly sand all areas where ever necessary. 10. Paint two finish coats on the cupboards and the doors. 11. Hang the doors on the cabinets and insert the drawers back into their proper locations. 12. Install the old or new handles/knobs on the cabinet doors. It is advisable to not clean the kitchen cupboards for at least four days to allow plenty of time for the paint to completely cure. Our company has used a product called Cabinet Rescue for painting plastic laminate cabinets on many occasions. As previously mentioned, just check with your local hardware store professionals to find a product that is designed for refinishing Formica cupboard surfaces.
