Organizing Tips - How to Organize Messy Cupboards There are many benefits to having organized cupboards and, specifically, kitchen cupboards. How many times have you been looking for a box of spaghetti and not been able to find it? Off to the store you go to buy yet another box of spaghetti, only to discover while looking for something else the following week that you now have enough spaghetti to feed a small army. Organized cupboards saves you money on your grocery bills, the time you had to take to go to the store and the aggravation of digging through the cupboards to come up empty-handed when you know you have the item you are looking for. Simple organization of your cupboards will put an end to all that hassle. If your cupboard space is small, invest in one or a few of the over the door racks that hold canned goods and smaller items. Plastic shelves designed for cupboards are also ideal to use in the kitchen. A great way to use them is for small items such as cups that can be stored on and below the shelf to save space in the cupboard and yet be accessible. Put boxed food, such as all your pasta items on one shelf. This includes macaroni noodles, the 42 boxes of spaghetti you now have, macaroni and cheese as well as your tomato, Alfredo and any canned or jar spaghetti sauce. Depending on the size of your cupboard shelves, designate a shelf for breakfast foods, a shelf for canned goods such as vegetables and fruits and a shelf for juice drinks, mixes, tea bags, coffee and hot coco. Put snack foods and lunch foods that the kids can help themselves to on a lower shelf so they can easily reach them. Of course, you will want to have guidelines concerning the availability of these snacks for the children. Invest in a label maker and label the shelves with the items that go on them. Now, if your spouse or kids help put the groceries away, they know where to put them. If you have a lot of cupboard space you could go as far as making a label for the outside of each cupboard. This, of course, would depend on the style of your kitchen and would need to be attractive as well as useful. Keeping your kitchen cupboards organized will not only save you time when you are running late and need to make a quick lunch or dinner but will also help the babysitter find the juice boxes if you step out for the evening. Colorado Over 50 was started by a Baby Boomer and his wife to address the challenges and joys of being part of the Baby Boomer generation.

Preparation Is the Key to Painting Cupboards Successfully In thirty years of remodeling cabinets, Ive learned that preparation is one of the most important aspects of painting kitchen or bathroom cupboards. In this article, we will explore a few of the things that can really make a difference in how the painting project will look when it is all done. IMPORTANT: DO NOT RUSH through this renovation. Allowing plenty of time to do it right is essential to the success of having your kitchen or bathroom cupboards look new again. Cleaning the Cupboards Mix a solution of Dawn dish washing detergent and water to wash your cupboards with. The areas around the stove and hood should be gone over several times to ensure that all of the grease buildup is removed. If you are preparing Formica surfaces, you can use lacquer thinner on them to remove grease build-up. Using Wood Putty and Caulking You are going to have to remove the cabinet doors and you should replace all of the hinges, handles or knobs while renovating the cupboards. This is probably going to leave a few holes that will need to be filled with wood filler. You should sand the areas down before placing the filler in the holes and allow sufficient time for it to completely dry. Use the wood filler on every crack and crevice that you can find. You should also caulk around all areas where the cupboards meet the walls, ceiling and floors. Be sure to wipe the access caulking off really well with a damp rag. You only want to fill the void areas. If it is necessary to rinse the rag out a few times because of all of the caulking thats OK. Just get it all off of the cupboards, walls, floor and ceiling. Sanding the Cabinets Once the wood putty is thoroughly dry, sand those areas first so that they are nice and flush. If you need to add more filler, DO NOT omit this step. Every inch of the cupboards should be sanded that will be painted. There is an optional product that can be used here, but you must check with your local paint supply company to ensure that it will work with the materials that your cupboards are made of. You can apply a liquid deglosser that will work almost as good as sanding the cupboards. Granted, you will still need to use sandpaper for the places you applied the putty to. Repeating the Process Once you have cleaned the cupboards, filled all of the blemishes and thoroughly sanded them, repeat all of these steps again. This is known as going over them with a fine-toothed comb. Trust me, this is what makes the difference between the do-it-yourself look or obtaining professional results. Applying the First Coat of Primer Painting the cupboards with a thin coat of primer is the next step. Allow the paint to completely dry. Fill any blemishes with filler and sand them out again. Repeat this process of applying the paint primer, filling flaws and sanding them out until the cupboards are literally "spotless." Now the process of painting the finish coats on the cupboards can begin. Its important to realize that the final coats of paint will only look as good as the surface is underneath. If theres a run, dip, depression or scratch anywhere in the primers surface, the exact same flaw will be seen when the finish coats of paint are applied to the cabinetry.

The Correct Way to Adjust Cupboard Hinges With Springs iam going to be giving you pointers on how to adjust your kitchen or bathroom vanity cupboard doors that have spring hinges? To recognize if you have this type of hardware, look at the edge of your door. If the mechanism is grooved into the edge of the panel and you can see metal on the exterior, then you have a Y-5 brand "SPRING" hinge. The Y-5 was designed to allow adjustments to be made in three different directions. Tools Needed: • Electric or Cordless Drill • 1/32" Drill Bit • Driver Bit With a Phillips Head • Phillips Screwdriver Take a very detailed look at all of your cabinet doors, paying close attention to what needs to be moved in which direction in order for things to look more uniform. If you have doors that are rubbing together it may be because they were originally made too large. In such cases, it may be necessary to have the doors cut down a little in order for them to close properly. Making the Hinge Adjustments Open a cupboard door and you will notice that there are four screws, two on the cabinet member and two holding the hinge fast to the door. One screw on the cabinet frame is a lock-down or "set" screw that doesnt allow for any adjustment. The other one is inserted into an oblong hole to allow for movement. The same is true for the hinge plate that is fastened to the cupboard door. Only remove the lock-down screw, then loosen the adjustment screw just enough to allow for the door to me moved a little. Leave enough tension on the hinge so that it can be moved, but is not "flopping" loose. Re-tighten the adjustment screw and close the door to see how things look. Continue this process of opening, adjusting and closing the cupboard doors until you are satisfied with your accomplishments. The alterations you are making should be very "minute" on each kitchen or bathroom door. You should relocate two doors by moving them a little rather than moving one door a lot. • Important: If a door is not resting on the face-frame of the cupboard correctly, never try to twist it by using the force of your hands. Always move the hinge plate on the inside of the cupboard frame toward or away from you, either at the top or bottom of the door. Once you are satisfied with your achievements, it is time to drill new holes for the lock down or "set" screws to be repositioned. While drilling these new holes, you will have to adjust the angle of the drill so you miss the original hinge set screw hole. It may be necessary to insert a few wooden toothpicks into the old holes. Be very careful to NOT drill through the cupboard door and ruin the decorative face. You can place a piece of tape on the drill bit to help you gauge how far you should drill. If you know how to make a stop-block, this would be a worthwhile procedure to undertake. Final Steps Tighten the set screws down and you are almost finished. If you need to adjust the location of the cupboard doors a little, its OK to tap them with the palm of your hand. There will be a little tolerance in the hinges even though the set screws are locked in place. Just be sure to NOT use excessive force. A slight tap here or there is OK. I always recommend hiring a professional cabinet maker to adjust cupboard hinges. There are always tricks in every trade that make things go smoother. You can try to do-it-yourself (DYI), but it has been my experience that most people just get frustrated and break something. Never the less, if you are the handy-man type, give it a try.

Despite the simplicity, it still offers such a different nuance with its modified form, pattern and color. Basically, as its name this cupboard is used to save many things from dust or any other things that may damage those which are usually placed in it. However, as mans idea develops from time to time, innovation is always demanded. Today it is made simpler and portable. Also, being light-weight and able to be folded, people choose this model of cupboard. You can take it everywhere you want to go. Generally, portable cupboard is made of rubber or parachute. Having been tested, rubber is considered stronger and thicker rather than parachute. This material is also safe and brings good effect for the contents inside. One specialty for this cupboard, its price is also more affordable rather than others, such as those which are made of wood and metal. Speaking on the contents, it is able to accommodate clothes, dinner equipment, shoes and many others. Especially for clothes, it provides enough space to put your folded clothes. Besides, you can also hang them with several hangers in the available space. Portable cupboard consists of two parts: suspension and cover. Suspensions are made of several metal sticks formed into a metal rack scaffold with racks. With such form, the rubber or parachute is applied to cover the scaffold so that it finally forms the real cupboard. The interesting part of the cupboard lies on the rubber cover since it is designed in different pattern and color. Mostly, the pattern is dominated by the scenery or flower. However, plain color also becomes favorite choice for many people, especially blue and red one. Portable cupboard needs zipper(s) that is usually fixed in front part. It is functioned as the door of any other types of cupboard made of wood or metal. This zipper is featured to ease the user to open and close the cupboard.

The Timeless Kitchen Cupboard For as long as meals have been prepared in kitchens, there have been kitchen cupboards in most of those kitchens. Yet, in recent years there has been a new emphasis placed on the role of the kitchen cupboard. This is a positive development given that there may be no other cabinet in the home, which is used quite as much as the cupboard. Cupboards must be built in a solid fashion since they are accessed so much. One part of the standard cupboard, which must be able to handle high traffic, is the handles themselves. The reason this is so is because kitchen cupboard door handles are touched, turned, and grabbed throughout the day. What is it that constitutes appropriate handles? First, solid construction with both the correct material and the right size will make for good use. Second, are the pleasing to the eye and consistent with the rest of the room? Third, are they agreeable to the hands that touch them throughout the day? The handles being ergonomically safe will go a long way to make the handles useful for many years. There are currently six styles that kitchen cupboards are being designed and built in for consumers to enjoy. Within each design there is a wide scope of quality, which everyone needs to be aware of when shopping for this product. Some cupboards are hand built and others are not. Painting kitchen cupboards is also either done by hand or by some form of technology. No doubt those built and painted by hand will cost more, but the quality of the product is heads above the rest. The six styles shoppers can expect to find are traditional, Outdoor, Country, Old World, Contemporary, and Transitional. What consumers will also find is that these styles mirror those found in other kitchen cabinets as well. The Traditional style is one that fills the kitchen with a more formal, dressy feel due to the colors and wood grains incorporated. This design will remind many of early American and European architecture. At the other end of the style scale is the Contemporary look. This design has none of the formal sense about it, opting instead for geometrics and more of a random feeling. The Transitional style is a melting together of the Traditional and Contemporary to create a more warm and inviting environment. With the Transitional we have a pleasant match between two opposites found in the Traditional and Contemporary. The Outdoor design pretty much says it all on its own. Next is the Country design with its brighter and more upbeat color schemes. Also in the Country design consumers will enjoy the more comfortable setting this style attempts to foster. The last style is the Old World, so labeled because of its common use of hearths, which are reminders of Europe centuries ago. Most recognize cupboards for their use in the kitchen as a food storage and preparation necessity, but cupboards also serve another role. Cupboards can also be excellent decoration spots for prized family pieces. Since cupboards often have glass doors or fronts they offer a place to put these items for easy viewing by all.

Reviving Your Kitchen Cupboards You may never know the number of times you open and browse through your kitchen cupboards, but if they are more of a hindrance than a help, you probably wish it were less often. Everybody needs to eat sometime, and most people visit their kitchen every day. You need to feel good about that space. Maybe even without money for a remodel, or without changing homes entirely, you can find a way to make yours a lovable space again. For those who dwell in apartment settings, adding storage may seem like the impossible dream. You are probably not allowed to nail anything to the walls. Free standing kitchen cupboards are the answer you need. There are plenty of shapes, styles and sizes of these cabinets to choose from. Your local hardware or department stores will have what you need, but remember too furniture stores, antique shops, flea markets and garage sales. Just keep your measurements handy in your wallet for when you are out and about. One of the best ways to find exactly what you need for cupboard space in your kitchen is to clean out the cabinets and truly analyze what you use the most and where you use it. Before you begin, take a look around. If there are bags of potatoes, two liter bottles of pop and boxes of cereal sitting out, then you need more food storage space. If you have pots and pans lining the floor or all over the counter tops, then it is dish storage that you seek. Consider also what you buy on a weekly basis in groceries and what happens when you really stock the pantry. Knowing your shopping and cooking habits helps a great deal when searching for any type of kitchen storage piece. Along with having efficient storage space, another point to consider is appearance. There is something to be said for a space that looks beautiful as well as it functions. Perhaps your kitchen needs spruced up. Not everyone has the cash to start again with brand new cabinets and for some of those who do have it, not everyone wants to. There may be nothing wrong with your current setup except for the need for a little face lift. It can be friendlier for the environment and the budget if you simply learn how to paint kitchen cupboards. Refacing cabinets in this manner does require time and patience on your part. It leaves much room for your own personal touch. Color options for paint are endless. Just be sure to use something durable for this high traffic area, prime first and really take your time with it. Kitchen wall cupboards may need a little extra attention in the painting process, but they do not need to come off the wall to get a good paint finish on them. With a little research into the way you use your kitchen and some added time and attention to the appearance of your kitchen cupboards, you can create a space that remains beautiful for many years to come.

Pros and Cons of Kitchen Cupboard Resurfacing There are many benefits to having your kitchen, bathroom or office cupboards remodeled by resurfacing them. There are a few things that are not so good. My views on the pros and cons of renovating cabinets in this way come from thirty years of custom kitchen fabrication and home renovations. The process I will be discussing is recovering old Formica plastic laminate with new Formica. One of the most common questions people ask is; "does the old Formica get peeled off?" My answer is almost always; "no". The process involves roughing up the existing surface with sand paper and covering over the top of the existing plastic. Buying and Flipping Houses One of the things that I have noticed is that contractors, Realtors and people looking to make a few dollars from buying and selling houses, oftentimes will get estimates on resurfacing cupboards. Covering over the old laminate and installing new doors is a reasonably priced, quick fix way of remodeling an ugly kitchen or bathroom in comparison to installing new cabinetry. One of the BIG PROS of resurfacing is that a contract can be signed today and the cabinets be completed within four days. That is if there are not special order doors involved and the plastic laminate is available for next day delivery. Some Old Cupboards Still Have Wrinkles Even though your kitchen may get a face-lift on the outside, many things will still "mark" the cabinetry as being old. Things like water damaged areas around the sink, drawers that just dont move smoothly and dated materials used on the interiors of cabinets years ago will be noticeable. Even though the outside will look like brand new-the inside of the cabinets almost always show signs that they are older cupboards. How Good Will the New Surface Adhere? If your existing Formica laminate is adhered really well, then the chances of the new plastic staying secured to the old are really good. If you have several areas that are coming loose, then you will have problems down the road. Sure the installer can glue the loose areas down before gluing the new covering on top, but this is not going to stop the process of the old mica letting loose over the course of time. I would say that this is one of the biggest cons of recovering plastic laminate cabinets. Design Limitations What you see is what you get. There is not much that can be changed with an existing set of cupboards that are getting resurfaced. Sure, you can add a few drawers, maybe cut something down to make a new appliance fit and install a new cabinet or two, but the basic layout of the kitchen stays the same. Money Savings Comparisons There are several things that make kitchen cupboard resurfacing appealing to the home-owner seeking to remodel on a budget. For the most part, several thousand dollars can be saved. It is less expensive to resurface cabinets for several reasons: • Less materials are needed • Appliances do not need to be removed and re-installed • Electricians and plumbers may not be necessary • The amount of labor needed is a lot less when compared to fabricating a new set of cupboards In my experience, it seems like the pros and cons people get hung up on are the price savings and the design change limitations. They want to switch their kitchen cupboard layout a bit, but do not want to spend a lot of money for new cabinets. As previously mentioned, resurfacing does not allow for a lot of layout design changes. So, people have a tendency to find themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place. Very often, what happens in these situations is that the customer, rather than choosing to replace or reface, decides to wait until they can afford to get everything new.
