Preparation Is the Key to Painting Cupboards Successfully In thirty years of remodeling cabinets, Ive learned that preparation is one of the most important aspects of painting kitchen or bathroom cupboards. In this article, we will explore a few of the things that can really make a difference in how the painting project will look when it is all done. IMPORTANT: DO NOT RUSH through this renovation. Allowing plenty of time to do it right is essential to the success of having your kitchen or bathroom cupboards look new again. Cleaning the Cupboards Mix a solution of Dawn dish washing detergent and water to wash your cupboards with. The areas around the stove and hood should be gone over several times to ensure that all of the grease buildup is removed. If you are preparing Formica surfaces, you can use lacquer thinner on them to remove grease build-up. Using Wood Putty and Caulking You are going to have to remove the cabinet doors and you should replace all of the hinges, handles or knobs while renovating the cupboards. This is probably going to leave a few holes that will need to be filled with wood filler. You should sand the areas down before placing the filler in the holes and allow sufficient time for it to completely dry. Use the wood filler on every crack and crevice that you can find. You should also caulk around all areas where the cupboards meet the walls, ceiling and floors. Be sure to wipe the access caulking off really well with a damp rag. You only want to fill the void areas. If it is necessary to rinse the rag out a few times because of all of the caulking thats OK. Just get it all off of the cupboards, walls, floor and ceiling. Sanding the Cabinets Once the wood putty is thoroughly dry, sand those areas first so that they are nice and flush. If you need to add more filler, DO NOT omit this step. Every inch of the cupboards should be sanded that will be painted. There is an optional product that can be used here, but you must check with your local paint supply company to ensure that it will work with the materials that your cupboards are made of. You can apply a liquid deglosser that will work almost as good as sanding the cupboards. Granted, you will still need to use sandpaper for the places you applied the putty to. Repeating the Process Once you have cleaned the cupboards, filled all of the blemishes and thoroughly sanded them, repeat all of these steps again. This is known as going over them with a fine-toothed comb. Trust me, this is what makes the difference between the do-it-yourself look or obtaining professional results. Applying the First Coat of Primer Painting the cupboards with a thin coat of primer is the next step. Allow the paint to completely dry. Fill any blemishes with filler and sand them out again. Repeat this process of applying the paint primer, filling flaws and sanding them out until the cupboards are literally "spotless." Now the process of painting the finish coats on the cupboards can begin. Its important to realize that the final coats of paint will only look as good as the surface is underneath. If theres a run, dip, depression or scratch anywhere in the primers surface, the exact same flaw will be seen when the finish coats of paint are applied to the cabinetry.

We spend a lot of time decorating our houses to keep them looking fresh and modern. One area we tend to neglect is fitted cupboards and cabinets we have around the house. They tend to be ignored because we think we cant do anything with them. If you rip them out youve got a repair job on the paint or wallpaper not to mention the gap it leaves! Its time to look at it in a different way by considering replacement doors. We often think about replacement doors for kitchens but what about other rooms? That fitted cupboard that you put the towels in the bathroom or the cupboards in your bedroom can easily be revitalised by simply replacing the doors. Sometimes we dont even have a cupboard but could really do with one. It may be that there is an odd space or a difficult angled area that you think you cant turn into a cupboard. As long as you find a company that can make made to measure cupboards and doors you can. The key when selecting a supplier for your replacement cupboard doors is to ensure they have facilities on site to make doors to custom sizes. Doors do come in standard sizes but not every cupboard you have is going to be a standard off-the-shelf size. If you find a supplier who offers a made to measure service the world is your oyster. You can have doors made for any size cupboard. The same goes if you actually need to build a new cupboard. Dont forget the styles and colours for your doors too. You need to find a supplier that can offer you a wide range so that you can match your new cupboard door to your existing decoration. You ideally want one who can offer you free samples so that you can take a few away and see what they look like against the rest of your room. If you want to be a bit more creative with your door you may want to consider having a unique pattern or design cut into it. For older houses, some cupboard doors may need to be ventilated to prevent mildew and mould building up, particularly if the wall of the cupboard is and external one. Having a design cut into the door can help you provide a stylish solution to this problem. You need to make sure your supplier has the capability to do this. The final thing to remember is you may need new fittings for your door. This includes hinges and door handles. If you are modernising your cupboard door, a new handle will be a must as an old, worn handle will look wrong and detract from your new door. Replacing cupboard doors is a great way to spruce up a tired old cupboard and make it look like new. Its a much more cost effective way of modernising your house and its more environmentally friendly too.

Builders Tips - Fix Cupboards BUILT-IN CUPBOARDS Nearly every residence has some built-in cupboards and often we want more of them! Whether inside the kitchen, bedroom or bathroom, theyre usually in fairly constant use and so suffer the exact same wear and tear troubles suffered by doors and windows. Kitchen cupboards in particular break from constant opening and closing and being in contact with water and heat. Built-in cupboards could be one of the additional expensive things to call a tradesperson in to build. There are some jobs the average DIYer can do around the house to fix up difficulties and update the look of their built-ins. Kitchen cupboard doors no longer line up over time, cupboard doors tends to sag, particularly the ones that get used all the time. About once a year I need to take a screwdriver to the cupboard door hinges and fine-tune them to be able to keep the doors aligned. Most doors are designed to be adjusted rapidly and very easily with nothing more than a screwdriver, as most kitchens built inside the last 30 years or so have concealed, adjustable hinges. Usually these hinges have four adjusting screws, allowing you to make three main adjustments: Lateral - the front grub screw (or set screw) adjustment permits the door to be moved side to side. Depth - loosening the back screw enables the door to be moved in or out. Vertical - the two top and bottom screws enable for adjustment of the door in an up or down direction. Youll have to experiment with the readjusting to acquire ideal alignment, but you will soon get the hang of it. Its worth noting that most of these types of hinges are manufactured in Europe and will in all probability have Pozidriv screws in them. Fixing sagging corner cupboard doors The problem with built-in kitchens is the corner cupboard, It constantly ends up a black hole where you cant find anything thats pushed up the back, and the doors, being double Sectioned, usually sag and eventually fall off. This kind of hinged door is a lot heavier than your normal cupboard door, as the hinges on the cabinet and holds the combined weight of both doors, In order to counter this extra weight and open the gap between the top of the folding door as well as the adjacent door, you must compensate by over adjusting not only the hinges that attach the doors to the cabinet but also the hinges that join the two doors together. Both hinges will have an adjustment screw that fits via a slotted hole, usually at the back of the hinge assembly. Loosen this screw slightly and then push the two parts of the hinge closer together just before re-tightening. It could possibly take a couple of attempts to get the doors to sit where you would like them. Fixing drawers Just like the rollers on sliding doors, rollers on drawer runners can get worn or damaged. Replacing the inexpensive runners or slides will have the drawers rolling like new again and is really a fairly straightforward operation: 1 - Pull the drawer forward and lift the front to remove it from the cabinet. This will give you access to both parts of the roller assembly. 2 - Removing just a couple of screws will totally free up the old mechanism. Once again, a decent hardware store should have an exact matching assembly; if not, try cabinetmakers supplies in the phonebook. 3 - These are commonly sold in pairs and you must replace both sides of your drawer at once. You will only want a screwdriver to replace the old screws into the original screw holes. Sometimes with excess pulling and over loaded drawers (or perhaps if the runners had been broken), drawer front can turn out to be loose and pull away from the rest of the drawer. If this is happening to yours: 1 - Remove the drawers and clamp the front back into position. 2 - Add some tiny metal 90 degree angle brackets to the inside of the drawer prior to it comes apart entirely. Another common complaint is the collapse of the thin baseboard inside the drawer. This will normally take place for the reason that the drawer has been overloaded. Inner Bedroom Cupboard Design Ideas Most bedroom cupboards consist of some basic shelving units to pack socks, underwear and t-shirts and some hanging units to hang up shirts, gowns and jackets. Some wardrobes will on the odd occasion even have a unit thats half shelving and the other half hanging. This type of unit is called a combination unit or combo unit for short. While the basic wardrobe cabinets are perfect for packing solutions there are many other ideas you can incorporate into the design of your cupboards. Lets look at a few ideas that will make your life both much easier and luxurious when using your bedroom cupboards. Adding Drawers There are two types of drawers you can fit into your wardrobe units. The inner drawer and the external drawer. The inner drawer is fitted inside the bedroom unit behind the door and can only be pulled out once the door is open. The external drawer can be opened from the outside of the cupboard and has a drawer front with handle thats flush with the doors of the cupboard. The inner drawer runner has to be fitted with drawer runner spaces so the drawer misses the doors hinges when it is opened. Drawers are ideal for packing socks, underwear and other clothing items that are often used as its easy to access those item. Open the door and pull out the drawer, its that easy. No more digging behind a pile of shirts to get to the one that you want to wear, every item in the drawer is visible at a birds eye. Fitting A Shoe Drawer Rack A Shoe drawer rack is very handy to store shoes on and slides out when you want to get a pair. It is fitted with a ball bearing extension runner so that the entire shoe rack protrudes out the cupboard when pulled out. Shoe drawer racks are usually manufactured out of stainless steel but can be made out of chipboard as well to match the interior color of your wardrobe. Install Pullout Hanging Rod Although most bedroom cupboards are fitted with fixed aluminium or stainless steel hanging rods pullout hanging rods are far better to use. A pullout hanging rod is used to hang clothes on but the rod itself is spring loaded to pull back up into its original position when pulled down to access clothes. The rod has a pole attached to it which is used to pull the rod down from its fixed position and push it back up again when youre finish using it. Pullout hanging rods are useful for accessing clothes hanging up that are hard to reach. It also makes your cupboard look super modern inside and although its quite an expensive asset to have in your bedroom its worth every penny.
