Reviving Your Kitchen Cupboards You may never know the number of times you open and browse through your kitchen cupboards, but if they are more of a hindrance than a help, you probably wish it were less often. Everybody needs to eat sometime, and most people visit their kitchen every day. You need to feel good about that space. Maybe even without money for a remodel, or without changing homes entirely, you can find a way to make yours a lovable space again. For those who dwell in apartment settings, adding storage may seem like the impossible dream. You are probably not allowed to nail anything to the walls. Free standing kitchen cupboards are the answer you need. There are plenty of shapes, styles and sizes of these cabinets to choose from. Your local hardware or department stores will have what you need, but remember too furniture stores, antique shops, flea markets and garage sales. Just keep your measurements handy in your wallet for when you are out and about. One of the best ways to find exactly what you need for cupboard space in your kitchen is to clean out the cabinets and truly analyze what you use the most and where you use it. Before you begin, take a look around. If there are bags of potatoes, two liter bottles of pop and boxes of cereal sitting out, then you need more food storage space. If you have pots and pans lining the floor or all over the counter tops, then it is dish storage that you seek. Consider also what you buy on a weekly basis in groceries and what happens when you really stock the pantry. Knowing your shopping and cooking habits helps a great deal when searching for any type of kitchen storage piece. Along with having efficient storage space, another point to consider is appearance. There is something to be said for a space that looks beautiful as well as it functions. Perhaps your kitchen needs spruced up. Not everyone has the cash to start again with brand new cabinets and for some of those who do have it, not everyone wants to. There may be nothing wrong with your current setup except for the need for a little face lift. It can be friendlier for the environment and the budget if you simply learn how to paint kitchen cupboards. Refacing cabinets in this manner does require time and patience on your part. It leaves much room for your own personal touch. Color options for paint are endless. Just be sure to use something durable for this high traffic area, prime first and really take your time with it. Kitchen wall cupboards may need a little extra attention in the painting process, but they do not need to come off the wall to get a good paint finish on them. With a little research into the way you use your kitchen and some added time and attention to the appearance of your kitchen cupboards, you can create a space that remains beautiful for many years to come.

People could make a decision on a house because of one option or choice, but more often than not, it is determined by several factors. Most choices come down to a house being well designed and fitting a families needs. From this an individual or family will expect the house or "investment" to grow in value over time. Some elements of the house are a bonus. Yes a well designed house makes the choice easier, but then with this choice will come other features that are nice additions. Smaller features of a house are not the deciding factor of home buying, but often help with the decision. One of these smaller features that could go along way is the kitchen cupboards or in other words the kitchen cabinets. Cabinets are not the first thing you think about when entering a house, but once you get to the kitchen, this feature becomes a noticeable and important attribute. A kitchen cupboard is an old term that has slowly transformed over the last half century. Many homes built before the nineteen fifties had the traditional kitchen cupboards. These cabinets were large solid wood fixtures that were often custom built for each individual house. The kitchen cupboard has transformed over the years and has become smaller in size. Of course this transformation has already started to go in a cycle and the traditional kitchen cupboard, once out of date, is showing up again. The housing boom in the nineteen fifties, largely brought on by the prosperity after the war caused a large demand for new housing. Tract housing developments called for new ideas for the kitchen. Traditional kitchen cupboards were no longer practical; instead, smaller, sleeker cabinets were needed to fit into these new houses. Houses were smaller and a large kitchen now became obsolete, so the kitchen cupboard was now substituted with the modern kitchen cabinet. For the next forty to fifty years these cabinets were the dominate feature in the kitchen. Of course there are always exceptions, but for the most part, the kitchen cupboard was downsized in height and width, made less appealing, and mostly was there for usage not design. Fortunately the cycle of design has changed and kitchen cabinets have come full circle. There are more choices today and actually a style of the kitchen cupboard is back in fashion. Large pantry cabinets have come back into a house and from this the renaissance of the kitchen has begun. Another sign of a "throw back" kitchen is the return of the taller kitchen cabinet. Most cabinets are around thirty inches high; however a forty two inch kitchen cabinet or kitchen cupboard had now become an option. Of course if youre going to buy these larger (forty two inch) kitchen cupboards, you will need a higher ceiling, but if you have that higher ceiling, these kitchen cabinets fill the space nicely. The kitchen cupboard has come a long way. Once a piece of furniture, it was then reduced to a no-frills, practical use, but now it has made its way into the kitchen as a furnishing with style.

Builders Tips - Fix Cupboards BUILT-IN CUPBOARDS Nearly every residence has some built-in cupboards and often we want more of them! Whether inside the kitchen, bedroom or bathroom, theyre usually in fairly constant use and so suffer the exact same wear and tear troubles suffered by doors and windows. Kitchen cupboards in particular break from constant opening and closing and being in contact with water and heat. Built-in cupboards could be one of the additional expensive things to call a tradesperson in to build. There are some jobs the average DIYer can do around the house to fix up difficulties and update the look of their built-ins. Kitchen cupboard doors no longer line up over time, cupboard doors tends to sag, particularly the ones that get used all the time. About once a year I need to take a screwdriver to the cupboard door hinges and fine-tune them to be able to keep the doors aligned. Most doors are designed to be adjusted rapidly and very easily with nothing more than a screwdriver, as most kitchens built inside the last 30 years or so have concealed, adjustable hinges. Usually these hinges have four adjusting screws, allowing you to make three main adjustments: Lateral - the front grub screw (or set screw) adjustment permits the door to be moved side to side. Depth - loosening the back screw enables the door to be moved in or out. Vertical - the two top and bottom screws enable for adjustment of the door in an up or down direction. Youll have to experiment with the readjusting to acquire ideal alignment, but you will soon get the hang of it. Its worth noting that most of these types of hinges are manufactured in Europe and will in all probability have Pozidriv screws in them. Fixing sagging corner cupboard doors The problem with built-in kitchens is the corner cupboard, It constantly ends up a black hole where you cant find anything thats pushed up the back, and the doors, being double Sectioned, usually sag and eventually fall off. This kind of hinged door is a lot heavier than your normal cupboard door, as the hinges on the cabinet and holds the combined weight of both doors, In order to counter this extra weight and open the gap between the top of the folding door as well as the adjacent door, you must compensate by over adjusting not only the hinges that attach the doors to the cabinet but also the hinges that join the two doors together. Both hinges will have an adjustment screw that fits via a slotted hole, usually at the back of the hinge assembly. Loosen this screw slightly and then push the two parts of the hinge closer together just before re-tightening. It could possibly take a couple of attempts to get the doors to sit where you would like them. Fixing drawers Just like the rollers on sliding doors, rollers on drawer runners can get worn or damaged. Replacing the inexpensive runners or slides will have the drawers rolling like new again and is really a fairly straightforward operation: 1 - Pull the drawer forward and lift the front to remove it from the cabinet. This will give you access to both parts of the roller assembly. 2 - Removing just a couple of screws will totally free up the old mechanism. Once again, a decent hardware store should have an exact matching assembly; if not, try cabinetmakers supplies in the phonebook. 3 - These are commonly sold in pairs and you must replace both sides of your drawer at once. You will only want a screwdriver to replace the old screws into the original screw holes. Sometimes with excess pulling and over loaded drawers (or perhaps if the runners had been broken), drawer front can turn out to be loose and pull away from the rest of the drawer. If this is happening to yours: 1 - Remove the drawers and clamp the front back into position. 2 - Add some tiny metal 90 degree angle brackets to the inside of the drawer prior to it comes apart entirely. Another common complaint is the collapse of the thin baseboard inside the drawer. This will normally take place for the reason that the drawer has been overloaded. Painting Kitchen Cupboards With Formica Doors One of the fastest ways to brighten up the most used room in the home is by painting the kitchen area. For years people who buy and flip homes have remodeled cupboards on the fly by applying a new coat of paint to them. When done correctly, this can be a great way upgrade the look of things. You may want to consider replacing your existing flat doors with raised panel ones. I would recommend that you find a cabinet manufacturer in your area to order them from. It would be a good idea to consider having them install the new ones because there are a few tricky things involved in the process. Tools & Materials Needed -Putty Knife -Drop Cloths -Airless Industrial Paint Sprayer (obtained from a rent-all business) -Paint Designed to Adhere to Formica Surfaces (primer & topcoat) -220 Grit Sand Paper -Wood Filler -Masking Tape -Paint Brushes and Roller -Phillips Screwdriver -Plenty of Rags -Paint Respirator Mask Be sure to set aside plenty of time to complete the project without being rushed. The more time you spend in the preparation process-the better your Formica kitchen cabinets will look when you have finished painting the cupboards. Steps for Repainting Formica Kitchen Cabinets and Doors 1. Put the drop cloths in place. Remove all of the hardware (handles or Knobs) from the cupboard doors. 2. Take the doors off of the cabinets. If you have European hinges, you may NOT even need the Phillips screwdriver for this step. Check to see if there is a release tab on the backside of the hinge. If so, pull up on the tab and the hinge should release from the mounting plate. 3. Remove the hinges from the doors. 4. Clean all surfaces with a mild solution of soap and water that are going to be painted. Thoroughly dry off all of the areas that you have washed. 5. Fill all holes that you intend to eliminate and chipped areas with the wood filler. Allow the filler to completely dry before sanding. 6. Lightly sand all of the surfaces of the cupboard door and cabinets with the 220 sandpaper that will be painted. Wipe all of the dust off of the cabinets and doors. 7. Set up an area where you can spray the primer on the backside of the cupboard doors, preferable outside. Give them one mild coat of primer. 8. While the back of the doors are drying, apply primer to the Formica cabinets using the roller and brush. When you are finished, the doors should be ready for a second coat of primer. 9. Repeat the process of painting the kitchen cupboards and doors with the primer until all areas have had two coats applied. Once the primer is completely dry, you may lightly sand all areas where ever necessary. 10. Paint two finish coats on the cupboards and the doors. 11. Hang the doors on the cabinets and insert the drawers back into their proper locations. 12. Install the old or new handles/knobs on the cabinet doors. It is advisable to not clean the kitchen cupboards for at least four days to allow plenty of time for the paint to completely cure. Our company has used a product called Cabinet Rescue for painting plastic laminate cabinets on many occasions. As previously mentioned, just check with your local hardware store professionals to find a product that is designed for refinishing Formica cupboard surfaces.

Naturally you will know that new kitchen cupboards will give your kitchen a whole new look! They will give a new life to the heart of your home, and if bought correctly, they can last years to come. Because your kitchen cupboards will live on in your kitchen for many years, or at least until you feel like or can afford to replace them again, you need to pick the right ones. It is easy to get overwhelmed by the choices that you have, so you need to break your decisions down to make them easier. The first thing to consider is your budget. Your budget will determine the whole change, and you will have a good idea of your limitations. If you know how much you can spend, then you can let the salesperson in the shop know what sort of price range you are looking at in advance, to save yourself the heartbreak of being shown beautiful cupboards that you can never afford. The next thing you can consider is the style and feel you are hoping for in your kitchen. This will in turn help you choose colours and materials. For example, if you are wishing for a homely, country style kitchen then you can consider buying wooden kitchen cupboards. If you want a more modern look, then you can consider getting something with steel finishes and modern knobs. For a fresh, clean kitchen that is timeless, you can choose smooth white cupboards with simple finishes. For a trendier kitchen, you can choose quirkier styles of cupboards and even a bold colour such as red! There are some premade kitchen cupboards that you can purchase. This means the style and colours will already have been created, you will simply need to order the size and quantity you want. This limits your freedom of choice with regards to specialising what you want, but it is also more cost effective. You will, however, have the option to get your kitchen cupboards custom made, and this is when the choices become a bit more important. You will have to choose the material, style and colour of your kitchen cupboards before they will be custom made and fitted into your kitchen. This gives you more creative freedom, but is also more costly. If you really want the freedom of expression, and want a unique kitchen you feel you have truly designed yourself, then the cost is worth it. Bear in mind that it is important for you to consider what you really want. Take your time in choosing the right cupboards, and do not choose something simply because it is cheap. Remember that the wrong materials or poorly constructed kitchen cupboards will warp and become tatty over time, and then you will have to do the remodelling all over again! If you are the kind of person who gets bored easily, then you must rather consider neutral colours. For a splash of colour and vibrancy in your kitchen you can dress up the cupboards by adding cute decorations and colourful plates around your kitchen.
