Kitchen Cupboards Provide Strategic Storage Spaces and Harmony to Kitchens In the 21st century, the design and style of kitchen cupboards have evolved from large, solid types to lighter, more flexible and versatile ones. Today, you can see in many kitchens various wall cupboards positioned higher. Storage facilities are better now with the present lines of cupboards being offered in the market. Traditional cupboard dimensions are being modified by manufacturers and the possibilities are limitless. Your taste, budget and likes play important part in determining the style of kitchen cupboard you will end up with. So many brightly colored cupboards are out there made of exotic wood, modern plastic, stainless steel or aluminum to really arouse your desire. You can choose from a wide range of models to suit your needs. A tropical wood specie with laminated finish and stainless steel edging can truly wet your taste. There are granite countertops but if it is not within your budget, a granite looking laminated model is available. You can choose a totally custom-built look and shape or the traditional square with different handles to match your kitchen cupboards. But before you buy your new set of cupboards, concretize first your visualized kitchen cupboard design and objective. Everything depends on how you plan to organize and layout the kitchen cupboards you intend to buy. The kind of things you plan to store per drawer or shelves have to be decided in advance. Harmony and storage spaces are what you should aim for. If your kitchen is only small, think of all space saving strategies. If you inspect the things you store in your kitchen area, you will find many things which should be transferred and stored somewhere else. Make it your goal to provide more space for kitchen related items you need daily. Store in your cupboard shelves things which are commonly for kitchen use. Choose a compartment near the stove for pots and pans. You can try putting dishes on shelves in front near the cupboard doors for better access. If your kitchen is spacious, where you locate your cupboards to harmonize with the rest of the kitchen ambiance gives you a lot of options. You are not limited to items necessary for kitchen use only. In fact, the cupboards are functional in character but can be a pleasing sight for sore eyes. One way to have an organized cupboard system is to have a printed list of things inside each shelf or cupboard drawer for ready reference and faster accessibility. It may require constant revision but the beauty is you have always an updated inventory of all important and miscellaneous things stored in an orderly fashion. There are homeowners who have the inclination to repaint their kitchen cupboards for some reasons instead of ordering new ones and nothing is wrong with that. As a matter of fact, it is a noble project if they have the necessary technical skills. They can end up with brand new looking and more attractive kitchen cupboards with their high quality type of solid hardwood. By choosing the right type of color, finish and design edging mix and match, the repainted cupboards can enhance the beauty not only of the kitchen but also the rest of the house. Whether you decide to repaint your present kitchen cupboards or buy a new set, upgrading your kitchen with a new kitchen cupboard system will not only add value to your home but also provide a more convenient and better looking kitchen space for you to work in, relax and entertain!

Pros and Cons of Kitchen Cupboard Resurfacing There are many benefits to having your kitchen, bathroom or office cupboards remodeled by resurfacing them. There are a few things that are not so good. My views on the pros and cons of renovating cabinets in this way come from thirty years of custom kitchen fabrication and home renovations. The process I will be discussing is recovering old Formica plastic laminate with new Formica. One of the most common questions people ask is; "does the old Formica get peeled off?" My answer is almost always; "no". The process involves roughing up the existing surface with sand paper and covering over the top of the existing plastic. Buying and Flipping Houses One of the things that I have noticed is that contractors, Realtors and people looking to make a few dollars from buying and selling houses, oftentimes will get estimates on resurfacing cupboards. Covering over the old laminate and installing new doors is a reasonably priced, quick fix way of remodeling an ugly kitchen or bathroom in comparison to installing new cabinetry. One of the BIG PROS of resurfacing is that a contract can be signed today and the cabinets be completed within four days. That is if there are not special order doors involved and the plastic laminate is available for next day delivery. Some Old Cupboards Still Have Wrinkles Even though your kitchen may get a face-lift on the outside, many things will still "mark" the cabinetry as being old. Things like water damaged areas around the sink, drawers that just dont move smoothly and dated materials used on the interiors of cabinets years ago will be noticeable. Even though the outside will look like brand new-the inside of the cabinets almost always show signs that they are older cupboards. How Good Will the New Surface Adhere? If your existing Formica laminate is adhered really well, then the chances of the new plastic staying secured to the old are really good. If you have several areas that are coming loose, then you will have problems down the road. Sure the installer can glue the loose areas down before gluing the new covering on top, but this is not going to stop the process of the old mica letting loose over the course of time. I would say that this is one of the biggest cons of recovering plastic laminate cabinets. Design Limitations What you see is what you get. There is not much that can be changed with an existing set of cupboards that are getting resurfaced. Sure, you can add a few drawers, maybe cut something down to make a new appliance fit and install a new cabinet or two, but the basic layout of the kitchen stays the same. Money Savings Comparisons There are several things that make kitchen cupboard resurfacing appealing to the home-owner seeking to remodel on a budget. For the most part, several thousand dollars can be saved. It is less expensive to resurface cabinets for several reasons: • Less materials are needed • Appliances do not need to be removed and re-installed • Electricians and plumbers may not be necessary • The amount of labor needed is a lot less when compared to fabricating a new set of cupboards In my experience, it seems like the pros and cons people get hung up on are the price savings and the design change limitations. They want to switch their kitchen cupboard layout a bit, but do not want to spend a lot of money for new cabinets. As previously mentioned, resurfacing does not allow for a lot of layout design changes. So, people have a tendency to find themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place. Very often, what happens in these situations is that the customer, rather than choosing to replace or reface, decides to wait until they can afford to get everything new.

The Correct Way to Adjust Cupboard Hinges With Springs iam going to be giving you pointers on how to adjust your kitchen or bathroom vanity cupboard doors that have spring hinges? To recognize if you have this type of hardware, look at the edge of your door. If the mechanism is grooved into the edge of the panel and you can see metal on the exterior, then you have a Y-5 brand "SPRING" hinge. The Y-5 was designed to allow adjustments to be made in three different directions. Tools Needed: • Electric or Cordless Drill • 1/32" Drill Bit • Driver Bit With a Phillips Head • Phillips Screwdriver Take a very detailed look at all of your cabinet doors, paying close attention to what needs to be moved in which direction in order for things to look more uniform. If you have doors that are rubbing together it may be because they were originally made too large. In such cases, it may be necessary to have the doors cut down a little in order for them to close properly. Making the Hinge Adjustments Open a cupboard door and you will notice that there are four screws, two on the cabinet member and two holding the hinge fast to the door. One screw on the cabinet frame is a lock-down or "set" screw that doesnt allow for any adjustment. The other one is inserted into an oblong hole to allow for movement. The same is true for the hinge plate that is fastened to the cupboard door. Only remove the lock-down screw, then loosen the adjustment screw just enough to allow for the door to me moved a little. Leave enough tension on the hinge so that it can be moved, but is not "flopping" loose. Re-tighten the adjustment screw and close the door to see how things look. Continue this process of opening, adjusting and closing the cupboard doors until you are satisfied with your accomplishments. The alterations you are making should be very "minute" on each kitchen or bathroom door. You should relocate two doors by moving them a little rather than moving one door a lot. • Important: If a door is not resting on the face-frame of the cupboard correctly, never try to twist it by using the force of your hands. Always move the hinge plate on the inside of the cupboard frame toward or away from you, either at the top or bottom of the door. Once you are satisfied with your achievements, it is time to drill new holes for the lock down or "set" screws to be repositioned. While drilling these new holes, you will have to adjust the angle of the drill so you miss the original hinge set screw hole. It may be necessary to insert a few wooden toothpicks into the old holes. Be very careful to NOT drill through the cupboard door and ruin the decorative face. You can place a piece of tape on the drill bit to help you gauge how far you should drill. If you know how to make a stop-block, this would be a worthwhile procedure to undertake. Final Steps Tighten the set screws down and you are almost finished. If you need to adjust the location of the cupboard doors a little, its OK to tap them with the palm of your hand. There will be a little tolerance in the hinges even though the set screws are locked in place. Just be sure to NOT use excessive force. A slight tap here or there is OK. I always recommend hiring a professional cabinet maker to adjust cupboard hinges. There are always tricks in every trade that make things go smoother. You can try to do-it-yourself (DYI), but it has been my experience that most people just get frustrated and break something. Never the less, if you are the handy-man type, give it a try.

Preparation Is the Key to Painting Cupboards Successfully In thirty years of remodeling cabinets, Ive learned that preparation is one of the most important aspects of painting kitchen or bathroom cupboards. In this article, we will explore a few of the things that can really make a difference in how the painting project will look when it is all done. IMPORTANT: DO NOT RUSH through this renovation. Allowing plenty of time to do it right is essential to the success of having your kitchen or bathroom cupboards look new again. Cleaning the Cupboards Mix a solution of Dawn dish washing detergent and water to wash your cupboards with. The areas around the stove and hood should be gone over several times to ensure that all of the grease buildup is removed. If you are preparing Formica surfaces, you can use lacquer thinner on them to remove grease build-up. Using Wood Putty and Caulking You are going to have to remove the cabinet doors and you should replace all of the hinges, handles or knobs while renovating the cupboards. This is probably going to leave a few holes that will need to be filled with wood filler. You should sand the areas down before placing the filler in the holes and allow sufficient time for it to completely dry. Use the wood filler on every crack and crevice that you can find. You should also caulk around all areas where the cupboards meet the walls, ceiling and floors. Be sure to wipe the access caulking off really well with a damp rag. You only want to fill the void areas. If it is necessary to rinse the rag out a few times because of all of the caulking thats OK. Just get it all off of the cupboards, walls, floor and ceiling. Sanding the Cabinets Once the wood putty is thoroughly dry, sand those areas first so that they are nice and flush. If you need to add more filler, DO NOT omit this step. Every inch of the cupboards should be sanded that will be painted. There is an optional product that can be used here, but you must check with your local paint supply company to ensure that it will work with the materials that your cupboards are made of. You can apply a liquid deglosser that will work almost as good as sanding the cupboards. Granted, you will still need to use sandpaper for the places you applied the putty to. Repeating the Process Once you have cleaned the cupboards, filled all of the blemishes and thoroughly sanded them, repeat all of these steps again. This is known as going over them with a fine-toothed comb. Trust me, this is what makes the difference between the do-it-yourself look or obtaining professional results. Applying the First Coat of Primer Painting the cupboards with a thin coat of primer is the next step. Allow the paint to completely dry. Fill any blemishes with filler and sand them out again. Repeat this process of applying the paint primer, filling flaws and sanding them out until the cupboards are literally "spotless." Now the process of painting the finish coats on the cupboards can begin. Its important to realize that the final coats of paint will only look as good as the surface is underneath. If theres a run, dip, depression or scratch anywhere in the primers surface, the exact same flaw will be seen when the finish coats of paint are applied to the cabinetry.

People could make a decision on a house because of one option or choice, but more often than not, it is determined by several factors. Most choices come down to a house being well designed and fitting a families needs. From this an individual or family will expect the house or "investment" to grow in value over time. Some elements of the house are a bonus. Yes a well designed house makes the choice easier, but then with this choice will come other features that are nice additions. Smaller features of a house are not the deciding factor of home buying, but often help with the decision. One of these smaller features that could go along way is the kitchen cupboards or in other words the kitchen cabinets. Cabinets are not the first thing you think about when entering a house, but once you get to the kitchen, this feature becomes a noticeable and important attribute. A kitchen cupboard is an old term that has slowly transformed over the last half century. Many homes built before the nineteen fifties had the traditional kitchen cupboards. These cabinets were large solid wood fixtures that were often custom built for each individual house. The kitchen cupboard has transformed over the years and has become smaller in size. Of course this transformation has already started to go in a cycle and the traditional kitchen cupboard, once out of date, is showing up again. The housing boom in the nineteen fifties, largely brought on by the prosperity after the war caused a large demand for new housing. Tract housing developments called for new ideas for the kitchen. Traditional kitchen cupboards were no longer practical; instead, smaller, sleeker cabinets were needed to fit into these new houses. Houses were smaller and a large kitchen now became obsolete, so the kitchen cupboard was now substituted with the modern kitchen cabinet. For the next forty to fifty years these cabinets were the dominate feature in the kitchen. Of course there are always exceptions, but for the most part, the kitchen cupboard was downsized in height and width, made less appealing, and mostly was there for usage not design. Fortunately the cycle of design has changed and kitchen cabinets have come full circle. There are more choices today and actually a style of the kitchen cupboard is back in fashion. Large pantry cabinets have come back into a house and from this the renaissance of the kitchen has begun. Another sign of a "throw back" kitchen is the return of the taller kitchen cabinet. Most cabinets are around thirty inches high; however a forty two inch kitchen cabinet or kitchen cupboard had now become an option. Of course if youre going to buy these larger (forty two inch) kitchen cupboards, you will need a higher ceiling, but if you have that higher ceiling, these kitchen cabinets fill the space nicely. The kitchen cupboard has come a long way. Once a piece of furniture, it was then reduced to a no-frills, practical use, but now it has made its way into the kitchen as a furnishing with style.

Inner Bedroom Cupboard Design Ideas Most bedroom cupboards consist of some basic shelving units to pack socks, underwear and t-shirts and some hanging units to hang up shirts, gowns and jackets. Some wardrobes will on the odd occasion even have a unit thats half shelving and the other half hanging. This type of unit is called a combination unit or combo unit for short. While the basic wardrobe cabinets are perfect for packing solutions there are many other ideas you can incorporate into the design of your cupboards. Lets look at a few ideas that will make your life both much easier and luxurious when using your bedroom cupboards. Adding Drawers There are two types of drawers you can fit into your wardrobe units. The inner drawer and the external drawer. The inner drawer is fitted inside the bedroom unit behind the door and can only be pulled out once the door is open. The external drawer can be opened from the outside of the cupboard and has a drawer front with handle thats flush with the doors of the cupboard. The inner drawer runner has to be fitted with drawer runner spaces so the drawer misses the doors hinges when it is opened. Drawers are ideal for packing socks, underwear and other clothing items that are often used as its easy to access those item. Open the door and pull out the drawer, its that easy. No more digging behind a pile of shirts to get to the one that you want to wear, every item in the drawer is visible at a birds eye. Fitting A Shoe Drawer Rack A Shoe drawer rack is very handy to store shoes on and slides out when you want to get a pair. It is fitted with a ball bearing extension runner so that the entire shoe rack protrudes out the cupboard when pulled out. Shoe drawer racks are usually manufactured out of stainless steel but can be made out of chipboard as well to match the interior color of your wardrobe. Install Pullout Hanging Rod Although most bedroom cupboards are fitted with fixed aluminium or stainless steel hanging rods pullout hanging rods are far better to use. A pullout hanging rod is used to hang clothes on but the rod itself is spring loaded to pull back up into its original position when pulled down to access clothes. The rod has a pole attached to it which is used to pull the rod down from its fixed position and push it back up again when youre finish using it. Pullout hanging rods are useful for accessing clothes hanging up that are hard to reach. It also makes your cupboard look super modern inside and although its quite an expensive asset to have in your bedroom its worth every penny.
