Cleaning Kitchen Cupboards: Eliminate the Grease, Bring Back the Shine Cleaning kitchen cupboards can be a tough job especially if there is a lot of grease and built up grime. Greasy build-up cannot be avoided in your kitchen and it is actually the worst kind of dirt build-up to clean. Simple wiping will not completely remove it but using certain solutions will help you efficiently clean your cupboards. You know its time to create that solution if your kitchen cupboards look dull, dirty and more importantly feel sticky when touched. Here are some concoctions you can try to help you in cleaning the cupboards. On top of the list is a degreasing dishwashing soap. Dont just use a liquid dishwashing soap but get the one that has a degreasing agent. Ordinary liquid dishwashing soap lacks the ability to remove the cake-on grease on your kitchen cupboards. Do not pour the degreasing dishwashing soap directly to the cupboard as it may damage the finish of your cupboards. When you use it, make sure that you dissolve the dishwashing soap in hot water then use a cleaning sponge to wipe the cupboard. Follow it up with a clean, dry and soft towel. Another option you can use is a washing soda. When you are cleaning kitchen cupboards with washing soda, take the necessary precaution of wearing gloves. Washing soda is made up of sodium carbonate which can be harmful on the skin because of its pH level. This pH level 11 solution is extremely basic and your skin simply cant handle it. You can use a mixture composed of a bucket of warm water and half cup of washing soda to scrub the cupboards. If you dont want the risk of burning yourself with washing soda, you can use a white vinegar solution instead. Aside from degreasing your kitchen cupboards, the white vinegar also has the ability to kill bacteria and germs. You will need a spray bottle when cleaning kitchen cupboards with a white vinegar solution. Spray the cupboards with a mixed solution containing equal parts of warm water and white vinegar. You then have to wipe the cupboard using a sponge or scrub brush it (but not too hard). Do not rinse the white vinegar solution that has been applied but leave it to be air-dried. If your kitchen cupboards are made of wood, make sure that you are brushing or wiping in the same direction of the wood. You also have to polish the wooden cupboard after degreasing it. You can use a wood polish to make the cupboard shine like new again. There are kitchen cleaning products specially formulated for degreasing wood cabinets. You may want to use those products to make sure that you are not using a solution that can end up damaging the quality of your wood. For the heavy grime on your kitchen cupboards, you can make use of common baking soda. But when you do, make sure that you dont mix it with white vinegar as this causes a chemical reaction. If you mix both then you will end up cleaning kitchen cupboards with a bubbly mess.

The Correct Way to Adjust Cupboard Hinges With Springs iam going to be giving you pointers on how to adjust your kitchen or bathroom vanity cupboard doors that have spring hinges? To recognize if you have this type of hardware, look at the edge of your door. If the mechanism is grooved into the edge of the panel and you can see metal on the exterior, then you have a Y-5 brand "SPRING" hinge. The Y-5 was designed to allow adjustments to be made in three different directions. Tools Needed: • Electric or Cordless Drill • 1/32" Drill Bit • Driver Bit With a Phillips Head • Phillips Screwdriver Take a very detailed look at all of your cabinet doors, paying close attention to what needs to be moved in which direction in order for things to look more uniform. If you have doors that are rubbing together it may be because they were originally made too large. In such cases, it may be necessary to have the doors cut down a little in order for them to close properly. Making the Hinge Adjustments Open a cupboard door and you will notice that there are four screws, two on the cabinet member and two holding the hinge fast to the door. One screw on the cabinet frame is a lock-down or "set" screw that doesnt allow for any adjustment. The other one is inserted into an oblong hole to allow for movement. The same is true for the hinge plate that is fastened to the cupboard door. Only remove the lock-down screw, then loosen the adjustment screw just enough to allow for the door to me moved a little. Leave enough tension on the hinge so that it can be moved, but is not "flopping" loose. Re-tighten the adjustment screw and close the door to see how things look. Continue this process of opening, adjusting and closing the cupboard doors until you are satisfied with your accomplishments. The alterations you are making should be very "minute" on each kitchen or bathroom door. You should relocate two doors by moving them a little rather than moving one door a lot. • Important: If a door is not resting on the face-frame of the cupboard correctly, never try to twist it by using the force of your hands. Always move the hinge plate on the inside of the cupboard frame toward or away from you, either at the top or bottom of the door. Once you are satisfied with your achievements, it is time to drill new holes for the lock down or "set" screws to be repositioned. While drilling these new holes, you will have to adjust the angle of the drill so you miss the original hinge set screw hole. It may be necessary to insert a few wooden toothpicks into the old holes. Be very careful to NOT drill through the cupboard door and ruin the decorative face. You can place a piece of tape on the drill bit to help you gauge how far you should drill. If you know how to make a stop-block, this would be a worthwhile procedure to undertake. Final Steps Tighten the set screws down and you are almost finished. If you need to adjust the location of the cupboard doors a little, its OK to tap them with the palm of your hand. There will be a little tolerance in the hinges even though the set screws are locked in place. Just be sure to NOT use excessive force. A slight tap here or there is OK. I always recommend hiring a professional cabinet maker to adjust cupboard hinges. There are always tricks in every trade that make things go smoother. You can try to do-it-yourself (DYI), but it has been my experience that most people just get frustrated and break something. Never the less, if you are the handy-man type, give it a try.

Its time to look at it in a different way by considering replacement doors. We often think about replacement doors for kitchens but what about other rooms? That fitted cupboard that you put the towels in the bathroom or the cupboards in your bedroom can easily be revitalised by simply replacing the doors. Sometimes we dont even have a cupboard but could really do with one. It may be that there is an odd space or a difficult angled area that you think you cant turn into a cupboard. As long as you find a company that can make made to measure cupboards and doors you can. The key when selecting a supplier for your replacement cupboard doors is to ensure they have facilities on site to make doors to custom sizes. Doors do come in standard sizes but not every cupboard you have is going to be a standard off-the-shelf size. If you find a supplier who offers a made to measure service the world is your oyster. You ideally want one who can offer you free samples so that you can take a few away and see what they look like against the rest of your room. If you want to be a bit more creative with your door you may want to consider having a unique pattern or design cut into it. For older houses, some cupboard doors may need to be ventilated to prevent mildew and mould building up, particularly if the wall of the cupboard is and external one. Having a design cut into the door can help you provide a stylish solution to this problem. You need to make sure your supplier has the capability to do this. The final thing to remember is you may need new fittings for your door. This includes hinges and door handles. If you are modernising your cupboard door, a new handle will be a must as an old, worn handle will look wrong and detract from your new door. Replacing cupboard doors is a great way to spruce up a tired old cupboard and make it look like new. Preparation Is the Key to Painting Cupboards Successfully In thirty years of remodeling cabinets, Ive learned that preparation is one of the most important aspects of painting kitchen or bathroom cupboards. In this article, we will explore a few of the things that can really make a difference in how the painting project will look when it is all done. IMPORTANT: DO NOT RUSH through this renovation. Allowing plenty of time to do it right is essential to the success of having your kitchen or bathroom cupboards look new again. Cleaning the Cupboards Mix a solution of Dawn dish washing detergent and water to wash your cupboards with. The areas around the stove and hood should be gone over several times to ensure that all of the grease buildup is removed. If you are preparing Formica surfaces, you can use lacquer thinner on them to remove grease build-up. Using Wood Putty and Caulking You are going to have to remove the cabinet doors and you should replace all of the hinges, handles or knobs while renovating the cupboards. This is probably going to leave a few holes that will need to be filled with wood filler. You should sand the areas down before placing the filler in the holes and allow sufficient time for it to completely dry. Use the wood filler on every crack and crevice that you can find. You should also caulk around all areas where the cupboards meet the walls, ceiling and floors. Be sure to wipe the access caulking off really well with a damp rag. You only want to fill the void areas. If it is necessary to rinse the rag out a few times because of all of the caulking thats OK. Just get it all off of the cupboards, walls, floor and ceiling. Sanding the Cabinets Once the wood putty is thoroughly dry, sand those areas first so that they are nice and flush. If you need to add more filler, DO NOT omit this step. Every inch of the cupboards should be sanded that will be painted. There is an optional product that can be used here, but you must check with your local paint supply company to ensure that it will work with the materials that your cupboards are made of. You can apply a liquid deglosser that will work almost as good as sanding the cupboards. Granted, you will still need to use sandpaper for the places you applied the putty to. Repeating the Process Once you have cleaned the cupboards, filled all of the blemishes and thoroughly sanded them, repeat all of these steps again. This is known as going over them with a fine-toothed comb. Trust me, this is what makes the difference between the do-it-yourself look or obtaining professional results. Applying the First Coat of Primer Painting the cupboards with a thin coat of primer is the next step. Allow the paint to completely dry. Fill any blemishes with filler and sand them out again. Repeat this process of applying the paint primer, filling flaws and sanding them out until the cupboards are literally "spotless." Now the process of painting the finish coats on the cupboards can begin. Its important to realize that the final coats of paint will only look as good as the surface is underneath. If theres a run, dip, depression or scratch anywhere in the primers surface, the exact same flaw will be seen when the finish coats of paint are applied to the cabinetry.
